Jorge,
Thank you for your comment, and for sharing the links to the presentations regarding temporary-to-permanent disaster housing ideas. While we are focused mainly on designing units and systems for the reuse of temporary housing as a means to build up a national inventory, in order to equip regions with needed stock in an expedited and sustainable manner, similar issues arise with both approaches (cost, waste, site selection and maintenance) and effect the efficiency and quality of life for residents in disaster situations. We will be posting more in-depth research and diagrams shortly, which should clarify the strategies and goals that we are focused on.

One way to make disaster housing resuable is to design it so that it can be converted into permanent housing. Working for FEMA's Long Term Community Recovery Section, I have proposed some disaster housing design approaches to accomplish that. The upgrades to the building structure would also allow the units to be used multiple times, prior to conversion to permanent housing.
Here's a link to a presentation of those concepts:
http://www.association.net/exmod.pdf

In addition to dealing with the product design, the manner in which the disaster units are placed within a FEMA group site can also be very costly and wastefull, often more on a per unit basis than the cost of the units themselves.
The following presentation deals with that issue:

But what I want to know is, how can we go about decorating the streets of Moss Point with some fancy seals? Has anyone looked into this issue?

Jacqueline,
Thanks for your interest in the results of our flood simulations. The full report of the research for Phase I of the floodproof construction research can be found through the GCCDS website at: www.gccds.org/research/floodproofconstruction/index.html. We welcome any links to your research in Brisbane, as the purpose of this blog is to facilitate discussion and share information related to floodproof construction. Hope to hear from you soon!

I am researching (on behalf of an industry group) how to improve the performance of industrial buildings such as cold stores in floods in the wake of floods in in January 2011 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. These buildings tend to be made on steel faced SIPS, I would be very interested in the outcomes of you simualtion test #3. I would be happy to provide you with the results of our research once we have finished i fthat would be of any interest
